Chicago's first permanent non - native american setteler was a trader named Jean Baspista Point Du Sable, who was free black man from Hati. He arrived in "Chicago" in the late 1770's and established many successful attributes that helped the local Natives, now one really knows why he left but left the natives in the early 1800's. As Chicago grew so did its population and its economy. Within the the 1800's - 1850's the population grew from a few thousand to 3 to 5 million people. Chicago made great complishments that chicago created was the railroads, and the meatpacking district. Even today 50% of the nations rairoad routes runs through chicago's railroad tracks. Then in 1871 the great chicago fire almost destroyed chicago, but the residents liing at the moment were tough and brave that within the next 10 years thay have rebiuld almost everything that was burned to the ground, and thats why today many old building are made from breaks because they didnt use wood any more because fear of another fire. For a brief time chicago was called the white city because of its "magical" county fair, where it had one the biggest fairs wheels in the world.
Chicago is located right on the shore of lake Michigan and the Chicago River runs through the downtown area into the lake. Chicago also has flat land that was able for farming and steady construction of buildings. Pilsen History & INfo
Pilsen is a neighborhood in Chicago that was established by German, Irish, and eventually by Czech that named their little community "Plzeň" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_West_Side,_Chicago) after a large city in the Czech Republic. In the late nineteeth century manny races of immigrants setteled in Pilsen, but the Polish and Czechs were the ones that made Pilsen every successful because of local businesses. Many of the immigrants worked in the stockyards and surrounding factories, until the 1960's Pilsen was home to many wealthy proessionals and the white upper middle classmen. It was'nt until the 1960's that the hispanic population started to arrive in mass numbers. That was because many of the factories were shut down to build UIC and other building associating with the school. Also because of new laws that made mexicans move from west side down to the south west side. In the late 1960's and early 1970's mexican artist have been painting the neighborhood with there murals of family, culture, and religion.
Pilsen has been at least 90% hispanic/latino but in the last 10 years there has been genifictaion of white wealthy people moing into the community which has lowered the hispanic population. Pilsen education has had its up's and down's, when it comes to elementary and middle school were range in the top 15 percentile when it comes to state tests. Although as the kids grow up and espiacally in high school they has been a huge increase in drop outs amoung the Pilsen area. Many of the gang recruting comes in high school and end up making stupid choices like joing a gang and ending up with a hard time trying to support themselves and their families. Many of Pilsens income comes from its main street on Ashland and 19th, and 18th street, and Cermack because of the many businesses along the road. Many businesses like Walmart, Petes Fresh Market, and even the YMCA, have been making great money in my community.
I would have to say that Pilsen is 15 to 20 minutes away from the CBD (cental busnesses district) which in the Loop in downtown Chicago (http://www.google.com/mapmaker?ll=41.869177,-87.650986&spn=0.11019,0.333023&t=h&z=12&saddr=2340+West+23rd+Place,+Chicago,+IL&daddr=The+Loop,+Chicago,+IL&utm_source=mapseditbutton_normal&dirflg=d&gw=56&lyt=large_map)
The cultural lanscape is very lation/hispanic, because of the many mexican mural around the neighborhood that are painted by skilled artist that cultivate our culture, religion, families, and our problems. Also Pilsen is full of catholic temple that were built like in the middle ages. There has to be more then a dozen temples within Pilsen and Little Village because of the high density of hispanic culture in the community. I see my sense of place to be with many mariachi songs coming from people's windows, orginal mexican food (tacos, spicy meats, beans, and my favorite "aque de ochata" - rice water). Sense of place is where i can speack in spanish in the middle of the street and not get wierd look froms non- hispanics. A place were I can be proud to be a mexican and have fellow kids who feel the same way.
